The TARDIS takes the Doctor and Leela to a huge, mobile sand mine on an alien world. One of the crew is killed and the murderer may not be human.

The Doctor and Leela are blamed for the murder of one of the sandminer's crew. But the real murderer is still on the loose, intent on wiping out the entire crew.

One of the crew is the insane Taren Capel, who is using robots to carry out the murders. The Doctor discovers that there are also others who aren't what they appear to be either.

As the robots close in, the Doctor and Leela join forces with the crew to fight back.

The Doctor and Leela take refuge at the home of Professor Litefoot.

The Doctor plans to confront Li H'sen Chang, but Greel no longer needs his servant.
